Scott Murphy - Demons Within

The Baykok
14" x 14"
Charcoal and digital.

Here's a sketch I've worked up for a painting I'm creating for a group show in November. I thought the subject matter fits perfectly for the demons challenge here at Month of Fear.

"The Baykok is a demon from the mythology of the Ojibway nation, which is said to fly through the forests of the Great Lakes region. The cries of Baykok are described as being shrill. Described as "Death" in The Song of Hiawatha, it is said to appear as an extremely emaciated skeleton-like figure, with thin translucent skin and glowing red points for eyes. The Baykok only preys upon warriors, but does so ruthlessly, using invisible arrows or beating its prey to death with a club. The Baykok, after paralyzing or killing its prey, then devours the liver of its victim."

Scott Murphy - Happy Halloween!

Dracula Strikes Again!
16"x20" oil on canvas.

Been overwhelmed with work the past few weeks so this one isn't quite on target for todays challenge, but i'd rather post something than nothing at all for the finale.

This is a painting I just wrapped up for a class assignment with the MFA program i'm doing.
It was for a 1970's Eerie magazine cover.
Also, Dracula has always been one of my favorite characters through his many incarnations.
I particularly enjoy the Christopher Lee version.

Scott Murphy - What Terrified You as a Child?

A couple days behind here, but I had a little extra time today to slip this in.

I was scared of lots of things as a child...again with the overactive imagination.
But, one thing that really scarred me as a kid was the movie E.T. I'm really not even sure why, but ever since I was shown the movie at a very young age it sparked an intense fear of the character and aliens in general. My grandfather also had a weird leathery stuffed version of the character that sat on the couch and would just stare at me. I've still never seen the movie again to this day.

Scott Murphy - My Favorite Horror Story

"And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."

I don't tend to read much horror as my imagination has a tendency to embellish and recall the scariest of stories at the worst possible times. But i've always been a fan of the writings of Poe. Particularly "The Masque of the Red Death."

This started out as a pencil sketch with the intention of doing it as a painting, but time has gotten the better of me. I hope to do a proper painting of it some time in the future.

Scott Murphy - Recurring Nightmare

Luckily, I don't have too many recurring nightmares lately. But when I was younger and still every once in a while now, I would often have the same dream that involved being trapped in some kind of dungeon or maze. Throughout the dream I would be pursued by some kind of creature similar to the guy above, and no matter how hard I tried, I could never get away. Eventually something would happen, I would trip, hit a dead end, or I would not be able to move faster than a crawl despite my best efforts, and it would catch me. This dream always left me jumping up out of sleep covered in sweat.

Scott Murphy - What Lives Under My Bed

This actually does live under my bed...and i'm very scared of it!
(though I suppose I prefer it to roaches)
